Helping our senior pets feel their best

As our pets get older, we often notice little changes. Your dog may take longer to get up after a nap, be less enthusiastic about walks, or hesitate before jumping into the car. Your cat may no longer leap onto their favourite chair or may spend more time resting.

Veterinary acupuncture for senior dogs and cats

While these changes can be part of ageing, they can also be signs of pain, stiffness or reduced mobility. The good news is that there are ways we can help our senior pets stay comfortable and enjoy their golden years.

Meet Dr Lily Ting (Qualified Veterinary Acupuncturist)

We are pleased to offer veterinary acupuncture with Dr Lily Ting on Fridays.

Dr Lily is passionate about helping pets manage pain and mobility concerns. Acupuncture can be a useful addition to an individualised treatment plan, particularly for older pets experiencing ongoing stiffness or discomfort.

Dr Lily will assess your pet's individual needs, health and lifestyle and discuss whether acupuncture may be suitable for them.

What is veterinary acupuncture?

Veterinary acupuncture is a gentle, drug-free therapy that may help improve comfort, mobility and quality of life in ageing pets. Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine and used alongside modern veterinary care, it involves stimulating specific points on the body with very fine needles.

For some pets, acupuncture may help to:

  • Reduce pain and support the management of inflammation
  • Promote circulation and support nerve function
  • Improve comfort and mobility
  • Support the body's natural healing and pain-relieving processes

Acupuncture can be used as a complementary therapy alongside your pet's existing veterinary care, including medication, rehabilitation and physiotherapy.

It may be considered for senior pets experiencing conditions such as arthritis, chronic pain, back or neck discomfort, muscle or joint problems, and reduced mobility.

The goal isn't to turn back the clock — it's to help your pet feel more comfortable and continue enjoying the things they love, whether that's going for a gentle walk, getting up from their bed more easily, climbing the stairs or simply being comfortable at home.

Could your pet be experiencing pain?

Our pets are very good at hiding pain, and the signs can sometimes be subtle. You may notice that your pet:

  • Takes longer to get up or lie down
  • Is less interested in walks or play
  • Hesitates on stairs or no longer jumps onto furniture
  • Has difficulty getting into or out of the car
  • Seems stiff after resting
  • Sleeps more than usual
  • Has changes in behaviour or daily routine

If you've noticed any of these changes, it's worth having a chat with your veterinary team. Getting older doesn't necessarily mean your pet has to live with ongoing discomfort.
